BBM 5.0 Beta Leaked

  • SMS support ? Threaded SMS is finally coming!
  • PIN barcode scanning ? Too lazy to add your friend to Messenger by entering in their PIN? Just have them click the Barcode option on their devices and, you guessed it, a barcode will show up letting the other party scan it with their BlackBerry camera and immediately add that contact to your list.
  • Backup/Restore Messenger list to microSD card ? FINALLY!!!

I just cannot believe that RIM is finally starting to innovate again. The Avatar sync with contacts really starts turning BBM into a mini social network for BlackBerry users. The ability to share your location is great. Add that to proximity detection that barely anybody does now and you have a hot product. All they need is a desktop component?

The 4.5/Curve version also appears to work for the Pearl 8100 and 8800 series, so if you own one of these BlackBerry devices and want to try BBM 5.0 make sure this is the one you download and not any other version. It is also important to remember that you need a minimum OS of 4.5.0.131, but having the latest OS definitely helps.

REMEMBER: Install at your own risk. Always make backups before making major changes/upgrades/downgrades to your BlackBerry.

A few people have been reporting issues about losing contacts. This is why I have the REMEMBER reminder below. It is VERY important that you make a backup of all your data before doing any kind up installation where beta software is involved.

If you are having problems with BBM 5.0:

  1. Do a battery pull (reset)
  2. Try re-downloading BBM 5.0
  3. If all else fails, reinstall your original BBM by connecting your BlackBerry to your PC and running the Application Loader in BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Make sure your current OS is installed on your PC.
