Nationwide Ban on Texting While Driving a Truck or Bus

We are getting one step closer to a nationwide ban of texting while driving for regular drivers. This comes right on the heels of a ban on texting while driving federal vehicles in December along with multiple state bans throughout the country for all drivers.

The latest law bans texting while driving large commercial trucks and busses throughout the United States. The fine for texting while driving a truck or bus will be up to $2,750 which is a hefty sum.

Now all we need is for RIM to build in some awesome voice control software and finally ditch this Nuance v2 crap they have been giving us for years. Until then we have Vlingo to pick up the slack.

Latest Distimo Report Shows Top Paid & Free Apps in App World

distimopaid_thumbDutch research firm Distimo just released their latest mobile ecosystem report listing the top ranked paid and free applications in the BlackBerry App World. I am not sure what they are basing these numbers off of but they are very interesting. It blows my mind that two out of the top 3 paid BlackBerry apps are memory boosters. Also Pandora is killing Slacker by taking 1st place in free applications compared to 8th place for Slacker. Distimo notes that the BlackBerry App World also has some of the highest prices with an average price of $8.26 for paid apps compared to Android(~$3.50), iPhone (~3.50), & WinMo ($6.99).

Leaked OS 5.0.0.451 Java And CDMA Files For The BlackBerry Storm 9500

The Java and CDMA files of OS 5.0.0.451 have been leaked for the BlackBerry Storm 9500. Since these files don’t include an executable file the upgrade process is a bit different than what you’re probably used to:

  • FIRST MAKE A BACKUP!
  • Download the Java files to your PC and extract them to a location of your choice. 7-zip.org has a free and great extraction application if you need one.
  • From your PC go to  Program Files > Common Files > Research In Motion > Shared > Loader Files
  • Find the latest OS for your BlackBerry device and open that folder
  • Drag and drop the extracted folder into this folder
  • Run the Loader program found in Program Files > Common Files > Research In Motion > AppLoader
  • Open options and select the OS that you dropped the Java files into
  • Finish the Loader process

Considering that OS 5.0 and related updates are slowly being rolled out, if you’re not comfortable with the process above you should probably wait for the official release.

Motorola Files Complaint With International Trade Commission Against Research In Motion

rim_logo_black

There is some bad blood between Motorola and RIM. Motorola has filed yet another complaint, this time with the U.S. International Trade Commission, calling for a halt of RIM’s “continued infringement” on five of their patents.

The five patents listed in Motorola’s complaint relate to certain early-stage innovations developed by Motorola in key technology areas, such as Wi-Fi access, application management, user interface and power management, that are now being used by RIM. These patented technologies are important to Motorola as they allow for more comprehensive connectivity, a better user experience and lower product costs.

Motorola has requested that the ITC commence an investigation into RIM’s use of Motorola’s patents and, among other things, issue an Exclusion Order barring RIM’s importation of infringing products; prohibiting further sales of infringing products that have already been imported; and halting the marketing, advertising, demonstration and warehousing of inventory for distribution and use of such imported products in the United States.

Press Release

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that it has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) alleging that Research In Motion Limited (Nasdaq: RIMM) (RIM) has engaged in unfair trade practices by the importation and sale of RIM products that infringe on five of Motorola’s patents.

Jonathan Meyer, senior vice president of intellectual property law at Motorola, said, “Through its early-stage development of the cellular industry and billions of dollars spent on research and development, Motorola has created an industry-leading intellectual property portfolio that is respected by the entire telecommunications industry. In light of RIM’s continued unlicensed use of Motorola’s patents, RIM’s use of delay tactics in our current patent litigation, and RIM’s refusal to design out Motorola’s proprietary technology, Motorola had no choice but to file a complaint with the ITC to halt RIM’s continued infringement. Motorola will continue to take all necessary steps to protect its R&D and intellectual property, which are critical to the Company’s business.”

Tvider For BlackBerry – Share Audio, Videos And Pictures On Twitter

tvider

It seems like BlackBerry Twitter applications are popping up out of no where lately. New to the game is Tvider, a BlackBerry application that allows you to send Tweets containing pictures, videos and audio.

Features:

  • Support for all 3 types of media – VIDEO, AUDIO, PICTURE.
  • Tools to instantly generate media using webcam and mobile camera.
  • Option to publish a pre-recorded media tweet from your HDD or mobile SD Card memory.
  • Instant Micro Media Tweeting experience designed by limiting the media length to 60s in case of video and audio.
  • Reply and Re-Tweet the media Tweets in your timeline.

I’ve played with this application on my Bold 9700 (using the 9000 version) and it works quite well. The user interface is very nicely designed, it’s simple to use and fast in terms of media retrieval.

Side note: Even though they use a Storm in the sample photo there is no Storm version available for download.
